The New Jersey legislature unanimously passed a bill to expand the adoption of "plug-in solar" systems, including for tenants and apartment residents. The Garden State Plug-in Solar Act (S2368/A4836) removes outdated restrictions that have historically hindered plug-in solar and provides households with a practical way to reduce energy bills and participate in the clean energy transition.

Plug-in solar panels, suitable for balconies, patios, or porches, offer a low-cost and accessible option for households to reduce electricity bills and reliance on expensive power. This technology is widely popular. A FDU poll in April found that nearly 80% of New Jersey residents support plug-in solar.

"New Jersey must ensure that our energy policies can reduce costs for residents, and this law is a direct step toward achieving that goal," said Senator John McCain. "Plug-in solar makes clean and affordable energy a reality for every household in the state."

If signed by the governor, New Jersey will join eight other states that allow rooftop solar, including Utah, Colorado, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Maryland, and Virginia.
